  • Hello world!

Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start writing!

  • The Basics

    What are the Basics?

    • Do you feel fully vibrant and healthy?
    • Are you dealing with a symptom or a number of symptoms that won’t seem to go away, despite you trying a number of things?
    • Do you experience niggling little issues or random pains, but nothing that you can really give a name to, or nothing that you feel is big enough to do something about?

It might sound silly, but often the first thing to do is to go back to basics:

    • Are you getting enough hours of good quality sleep?
    • Are you drinking enough clean water?
    • Are you moving your body every day?

Many of us might initially answer Yes! to the questions above, but when we take a closer look we might realise that we are not actually ticking the boxes.

The amount of sleep needed for each individual may vary depending on age, health or other factors, but most adults require about 7-9 hours of good quality sleep a night. What do we mean by good quality sleep? Well it means that you regularly get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep (This can include briefly waking for 1 toilet visit).

    • Do you drift off to sleep with ease or do you lie awake for over 30 minutes on a regular basis. Possibly replaying events or conversations from your day?
    • If you do get up once for a toilet visit during the night, do you quickly get back to sleep?
    • Do you have young children who regularly require your attention during the night?
    • Do you regularly experience racing thoughts either trying to get to sleep or during the night if you wake?

A good night of sleep can make a world of difference because our bodies do amazing work, every single night, whilst we sleep! During sleep our bodies repair themselves, they regrow tissues, build bone and muscle.

One of the most interesting discoveries in the past decade is that the brain has a “waste management system.” Like people, in order to have the energy to do their work, brain cells need to eat (to absorb, primarily, sugar and oxygen). And, as in people, meals lead to wastes that need to be disposed of. The waste management system (called the glymphatic system) is a series of tubes that carry fresh fluid into the brain, mix the fresh fluid with the waste-filled fluid that surrounds the brain cells, and then flush the mix out of the brain and into the blood. This occurs primarily during deep sleep. (Reference)

    The benefits include:

    • Improved memory and concentration
    • Being more energetic and alert
    • More emotional and social intelligence
    • Lower inflammation
    • Stronger immune system

So many good things come from water and yet we forget to drink it. Having a system around it is one of the most important things we can do for our health, so drink more water. And measure it! If you do get 8 hours of sleep during the night, that is a long time to go without drinking any water. Drinking water first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach is a good way to rehydrate your body quickly. If you can drink 1 litre within the first hour of waking, then you will be set up well to achieve your daily water intake goal. Drinking water first thing in the morning has many health benefits. Also drinking less in the evening, is important so that multiple trips to the toilet do not interrupt your sleep.

According to scientist Dr. Batmangheligj, after his extensive research, we should drink of 1 litre of water for every 22Kgs of bodyweight. If we are exercising or sweating then we might need more than that, to compensate for the water we are losing.

Reasons to drink filtered water and drink an adequate amount daily include:

    • To reduce chlorine and fluoride intake (Which can prevent our cells from repairing properly and damage our gut flora)
    • To flush out toxicity
    • To lubricate and cushion joints
    • To maintain a normal temperature
    • To improve digestion
    • To maintain optimal brain activity
    • To improve mental clarity
    • To feel better!

When you think of moving your body every day, do you think of it as a chore, or that it requires running for miles or bench-pressing your weight, or simply that you don’t have time?

Moving every day has the capacity to improve every part of your body, from your brain to your joints. It’s not just about high-intensity, sweat-inducing activity. We have looked at how important a good nights sleep is and being active during the day is one of the greatest methods to achieve a decent night’s sleep. Moving your body, exercise and getting your circulation going is key, when wanting to create or maintain good health and live a long life.

Movement does not need to be done all in one session. Possible ways to move your body include:

    • Put on a favourite song or a few songs and dance along
    • Do 15 mins of body shaking
    • Attend Yoga or dance classes
    • Swimming

The intensity and duration of your movement sessions will depend on your current health status and the amount of time that you can make available. There are many different ways to exercise but the most easily available and cost effective is very often walking and walking is one of the best things you can do for your body.

Try it: Go for a 30 minute walk outside (at a good pace that’s comfortable for you), in the sunshine (When the UV levels aren’t above 3) and get some fresh air. Combine this with drinking clean water throughout the day and a good night’s sleep and see if you notice any improvement in your mood, energy levels and overall well-being!

  • What’s your morning routine?

Do you have a morning ritual?

In our busy lives, it can sound like something that might be a challenge or take too long. If you have young children in your home, often they are your alarm clock and as soon as they wake you are tending to their needs.

We don’t need to spend 2 or more hours, sitting on a yoga mat in meditation for a morning ritual to be beneficial. Even if you have a few minutes, it can help set you up for the day ahead, so that you can start your day from a place of calmness and positivity.

For decades I would start my day from a place of dread, looking at what was ahead of me, thinking of the to-do list and the deadlines. Within minutes (if not seconds) I would be in a state of overwhelm and my body would start releasing cortisol and go into fight or flight mode, inside of our bodies this reaction is the same as if we had to jump up and try and run away from a perceived threat to our survival! It can lead to anxiety and fatigue.

This doesn’t have to be the case, as it’s not very common for a lion or tiger to come sprinting into our bedrooms!

When we first wake up and also just before we go to sleep, our brains naturally go through a Theta state. During this state our subconscious mind is recording instead of playing. Science has shown that what we think about during these moments will automatically change our life because our subconscious mind creates about 95% of our life. So whether you say affirmations, meditate, just breath consciously or think positive thoughts. All of these things can have a huge and powerful impact.

A morning ritual, does not have to be exactly the same every day. It can vary depending on your circumstances, how you are feeling and how much time you have available. Also, for the mornings when you have been up half of the night with racing thoughts or just didn’t sleep well for whatever reason. If you are nursing/feeding a child and you just don’t have the energy, that’s ok too always be kind to yourself!

    Suggestions for morning rituals:

    1. Water. Within the first 30 minutes of waking drink water, ideally as close to a litre as you can. Our bodies naturally dehydrate during the night. Just being well hydrated helps our bodies to get rid of toxins, have more energy, improves our digestion and mental clarity.
    2. Breathe. Take 3-5 conscious breaths, inhale expanding your abdomen fully before slowly releasing the exhale.

If this is all you can manage for now, congratulate yourself on taking the first step to developing you own morning ritual! Try it for 2 weeks and see if you notice a difference.

Below are just some ideas of how you might create your own morning ritual. Different things will appeal to different people and this is intended simply as a guide, a starting place. There are many free videos on YouTube:

    Walking:
A brisk 30 minute (more if you can) walk outside or a swim, jog or run. – Getting our bodies moving activates out lymphatic system, which cleanses toxicity form the body through the four channels of elimination (Respiration, perspiration, defecation and urination).

You might also try some Yoga, Chi gong, Tibetan rites, Thai Chi… the list is long and it helps if you can find something that you enjoy doing, you might put on your favourite song and move/dance for a few minutes? Whatever you choose to put in your routine, it can really have a profound effect on shaping the rest of your day.

Wishing you a truly vibrant and positive day!

  • Judging ourselves and others

Being Judgemental About Ourselves and Others

In our daily lives we regularly judge ourselves and others very harshly. We will look at our self-judgement shortly, but first let’s look at how we treat others.

We are often taught from an early age that life should be a struggle, a type of survival of the fittest mentality and we are often taught that we have to compete against each other in order to be viewed by other people as; the most successful or the happiest, to have the most holidays each year, or drive the most expensive car In order to show our prestige and our status, or worth in society. We need to get that high paying, high level job to achieve status, satisfaction, happiness and ultimately “a good life”

When we meet people, even people that we might have been good friends with for many years or colleagues that we might have worked alongside for years. We only see the tip of the iceberg. We only see the part of that person that they want to show to the world. How often do we think about what the background/past experiences of that person or of that family might have been? Do we think about how those experiences shaped their beliefs and perspective in the present situation? Often people speak or react without considering the bigger picture/ other things that the person or family might be going through.

    Remember this quote:
“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be Kind. Always”.
None of us are perfect and in the heat of a moment, it can be hard to take a few seconds before speaking or reacting, especially if it triggers a response in us due to a past experience, a memory of something that might have occurred in a similar way before!!
Imagine what billions of humans could accomplish if we loved and accepted one another, without greed, envy, competing or comparing ourselves.

We can make a change today!
Be the influence you want to see more of in the world, just smiling at someone can make a massive difference to their day. Choose to lift others up. Choose to set the example, the example of kindness and compassion, to the best of your ability.

Coming back to our harsh judgement of ourselves. There is only one voice that we will hear throughout our entire lives and that is the voice inside our own head. When we get stuck with negative thoughts, which replay in a loop, it can be very hard to break out of that loop. The thoughts and conversations can use up a lot of our energy. How many times have you replayed something over in your mind again and again, feeling upset or worrying about it? Did you feel any better after spending hours of doing this to yourself? Did anything actually change as a result? Most of the time it doesn’t change anything, except we might feel worse and often exhausted.

The language we use to talk to ourselves is so important. Studies have shown that negative or toxic thoughts, produce toxic chemicals in the body. This means that every time we think something negative there is a physical consequence that is felt in our bodies.

Try instead to flip negative thoughts around, when you find yourself thinking things like “I ate too much so now I’m going to be fat”, switch it to “I ate a lot today but I have a great metabolic rate and my body will just burn it up” At first it won’t feel true to you, but the more you can practise this, installing positive beliefs in yourself, the easier the switch to thinking more positively becomes.

“I don’t deserve respect from others, I’m a nobody”, this is not true switch it to “I’m worthy” or “I shouldn’t have done or said that” or “Nobody cares about me and why should they?”, “I try so hard but it’s never enough, I’m not enough” etc. When you catch yourself thinking things like this, you can make the choice to switch it and instead say to yourself. “I do the best that I can, to the best of my ability and that is always enough!” “I have phenomenal coping skills!”.

Thank you for reading this long post, beautiful soul. I hope that you give this a try. With regular practice you will find that you catch your negative thoughts more often, you will become more aware and once you have awareness it is easier to make the switch to positivity. Know that exactly as you are right now in this present moment, you are beautiful, you are loved and you are definitely enough!!

  • How to begin your healing journey

Where and how do you start on your healing journey?

Many people looking for holistic healing methods, have either been sick for an extended period of time, unable to find solutions, or they have experienced some kind of triggering event or trauma – something that has pushed their body over the edge, so to speak, and resulted in a rapid breakdown in their health.

We all experience traumatic instances, many of which can occur during childhood, at a time when we do not know how to express or work through them. These events can be hurtful and painful and when we don’t know how to or don’t get the opportunity to express them, our hurt or pain can become lingering trauma.

Over the years, our bodies store more and more events that we didn’t resolve for whatever reason and these lingering traumas have a compounding negative effect on our bodies. We are also constantly bombarded by toxins in our environment, sometimes we have poor quality water or air and maybe not enough unprocessed and nutritious food. The combination of these things, leads to our bodies to become inundated and unable to function properly. Our immune systems become overburdened and this is when we start to experience symptoms.

Symptoms are the way in which our body tries to signal to us that something is not working as it should and we might need to take some action in order for our bodies to be able to return to balance. If we just try to treat the presenting symptoms by suppressing them with medication, the body will often then present a different symptom and we might witness a downward spiral in our health where we need to take more and more medications and we just get sicker and sicker. For many of us, by the time we realise that we are seriously or chronically ill, it has been building and building in our bodies for a long time, maybe even decades.

Do not despair as there is hope. No matter how long you might have been sick for, it can often be reversed in the right environment and given the right conditions! Obviously, each of us are unique and each of us will have a different story and perspectives based on our life experiences and our beliefs.

1 – Try to walk for 30 minutes outside every day.

Early in the day before the sun is too strong is best. Just doing this one thing will increase Vitamin D levels, Vitamin D is a hormone that corrects and gives information to all the cells in your body and increases your immune system.

Walking briskly will bring movement to your lymphatic system, which is a critical drainage system for the whole body that carries out cellular and bodily waste and toxins. The lymphatic system helps regulate fluid balance, immune health and more. If necessary, start with a shorter walk at first and increase each day until you can manage 30 minutes.

2 – Hydrate with clean water.

In Australia, tap water is often full of chemicals. Try, where possible, to drink filtered water out of a glass, instead of a plastic container.

A good guide is to aim for 1 litre of water per 22Kgs of body weight, for example if you weigh 66Kgs then aim to drink 3 litres of water each day in order to be well hydrated. Of course this will vary depending on your activity levels, if you are doing sports or are out in the sun then you might require more than this.

3 – Be kind to yourself!

Know that if you are reading this and seeking more information, then you have already begun on the path to better health!!
